Obituary for Walter L. Mahute

Walter L. Mahute, 79, of State College, died Wednesday, July 19, 2017, in Milesburg, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born October 18, 1937, in Brisbin; a son of the late Steve J and Anna Kislack Mahute.

On May 19, 1962, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Hawk Run, he married Barbara L. Lockey who survives at home.

Mr. Mahute earned an Associate Degree in accounting and bookkeeping from the Altoona School of Commerce.

Walter served in the U. S. Army Reserve from 1960 until 1965, where he earned an M-1 Rifle Marksman Badge.

He worked as an accountant/bookkeeper at Penn State from 1960 to 1993. In 1972, he and his wife Barbara founded Family Refreshments, a Beer Distributor Company in Chester Hill, Philipsburg, which continues to operate as a family business. For more than a decade Walter served as a Judge of Elections in North East Ferguson Township 2.

In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars, hunting, fishing, snacking on Oreos & Cool Whip. He also loved music, especially Polka music and Polka dancing. Earlier in life he served as a drummer with a band known as the Mellowdettes.

Walter was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College; American Legion Post 245, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, in Bellefonte.

Surviving Mr. Mahute in addition to his wife are three sons, Gary Mahute of State College, Ron Mahute (Kelley) of Philipsburg, and Thom Mahute (Jodi) of Lancaster; one daughter, Laura Zimmerman (Adam) of Julian; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Madalyn, Michael, Madison, Morgan, Emma and Taylor; two great grandchildren Lilly and Jack; and one brother, John Mahute (Alice) of Houtzdale.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Arthur Mahute.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. A Rosary service will be conducted at 3:45 p. m. Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the funeral home. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Monday July 24, 2017; at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College with Father Jonathan Dickson as Celebrant. Burial will be in Pine Hall Cemetery, W. College Ave. State College, PA.
