M. Leona Lightner, 95, of State College, went to be with the Lord on October 8, 2016. Raised in nearby Pleasant Gap, Leona married Ray A. Lightner on May 6, 1945. Leona and Ray were married 45 years when Ray passed away in 1990.


Leona is survived by a brother Paul Houser (Louise) of Centre Hall.


Leona moved into Mount Nittany Residences in September of 1992. Although Ray and Leona did not have any children of their own, Leona has three nieces and one nephew and their families that she treats as her own. Leona loved spending time with family and friends.


Growing up Leona held many jobs, she worked at Old Main Sandwich Shop until it was torn down, and then went to Mikes Lunch, from there she went to the Elks Club. She lived on S. Atherton Street in a home she and Ray bought in 1945.


Leona loved getting surprise visits from her nieces and nephew. She remembers the time her niece stopped by unexpectedly and said pack your bags we're going to Florida. Leona had never flown before, they packed her bags and off they went.


Friends and family will be received from 11:00 a.m until noon. on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Heintzelman Funeral home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College. A service will immediately follow at noon with The Reverend Mark Messner officiating. Interment will be held at Centre County Memorial Park, State College.
