Margaret M. Mattern, 89, of Altoona, formerly of Matternville, where she lived most of her life, died Saturday August 6, 2016 at Golden Living-Hillview, Altoona, PA

She was born October 17, 1926 at Centre Hill, Potter Township, Centre County, a daughter of the late, Roy and Ruth Ripka McClintic.

On April 14, 1944 she married James B. Mattern, who preceded her in death August 29, 2002.

Margaret graduated from State College Area High School, class of 1944.

In her pre-teen and teen years, she worked as a nanny and doing house work for professor’s wives at Penn State University. In the early forties, she worked as telephone operator in the Mineral Science Department at Penn State. For many years, she chose to be a full time homemaker, then after her children were grown; she went to work for Jostens Printing and Publishing in State College and retired from there as a Paste Up Supervisor.

Early in life she was associated with the Methodist Church, having been baptized in the then Evangelical Methodist in Linden Hall. While living in the State College area later in life she was a member of Grays United Methodist Church in Stormstown. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the American Legion Post 245 in State College.

Her whole life revolved around her family. They were her life, her mission, and her enjoyment. In addition, she did enjoy watching television, bird watching, observing nature, listening to a variety of music, and enjoyed playing bingo.

Surviving Mrs. Mattern are three daughters; Jeanne Williams of Boalsburg, Linda Mattern (Glenn Durham) Tucson, AZ, and Betsy Moon (Eugene) of Conroe, TX; one son; Jan Mattern (Catherine) of California City, CA.; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Stanley McClintic.

Friends will be received from 10:30 am to noon Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. A memorial service will follow immediately at noon at the funeral home, with the Reverend Dr. Renee Ford officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park, at the convenience of the family.
